Who we Are

The Bible Society of Kenya is a nonsectarian, nondenominational organization that serves ALL Christian Churches, Christian Church Organizations and Christian Individuals by providing the Word of God to them.

Our Mandate
The Mandate of The Bible Society of Kenya is to share the Good News of Jesus Christ by Translating, Producing, Distributing and encouraging the use of Holy Scriptures.

BSK History in summary

Bible work in Kenya started in 1844 when Dr. Johann Ludwig Krapf started translation of the Bible into Kimvita Kiswahili.

Between 1869 and 1958 the British and Foreign Bible Society (BFBS) and the American Bible Society  carried out Bible work in East Africa through agencies and missionaries from their countries.  The missionaries translated a number of scriptures formats during this period and took them for printing in their countries.  The translated scriptures were later sent back to the same missionaries to distribute as part of their missionary calling.

Modern Bible Society work in Kenya began when BFBS decided to open an office in Kenya to serve Eastern Africa, including Madagascar and Mauritius.  The work was reorganized into joint Agencies of BFBS (Britain) and BFBS (Australia).  One remarkable event for Bible work in East Africa was the opening of the Bible House in Nairobi on 16th July 1958

With the independence of Kenya in 1963, churches and Kenyans in general felt the need to take the responsibility of their own Bible Society.  In response to this, an Advisory Council was formed to help the Executive Secretary lay the groundwork for an autonomous Bible Society.  In 1970 the Bible Society was registered under the Societies Act. In 1977 BSK became a full member of the United Bible Societies.

From 1996, a number of things have happened that are propelling the society in its own vision of moving towards an independently functioning Society that fulfils its mission and supports other Bible Societies through the UBS.
