Translation of Scriptures started in Kenya in 1844 with Dr Ludwig Krapf. Kenya has 53 large language groups.
- 16 have Bibles
- 12 have New Testaments
- 4 have portions.
Over 20 language groups in Kenya have no Scriptures in their own language.
Translations are costly in money (average Kshs. 15 – 17 million) and time (average 15 years).
BSK’s 2003 budget for the seven ongoing Translation Projects is Ksh.9.1 million.
Translation Needs
Bible translation work is a tedious and long process which takes between 15 and 17 years. Bible Society of Kenya would like to shorten the time it takes to complete a translation project. A translation project typically has 3 full time translators.
Bible Society of Kenya has tabulated the cost of translating a single verse at about Kshs 130 or roughly US$ 2. Bible Society of Kenya welcomes you to partner in translating Scriptures as the Lord may enable you.
Write to us and let us know how you would like to participate in translation of the Bible for communities in Kenya
